As communicated to parents earlier in the week we have seen an increase in Covid cases this week with six staff and a number of students contracting the virus. We have also had other staff ill, or caring for sick children, so it has proved difficult to provide cover for all staff for the entire week, resulting in several classes having to be split.
I would just like to acknowledge the wonderful work our relief teachers do when they work at St Mary’s. They willingly step into any role whether it be classroom teacher or take on STEM or music. Without their flexibility and professionalism events such as our soccer carnival and Mother’s Day activities would be difficult to run.
If you have a child with flu-like symptoms I ask you to use a RAT to see if they have Covid. I am concerned that we have children attending school who may have Covid.
This week I sent out a message to parents informing them that because of the number of staff that are absent, we have pushed our parent-teacher interviews back one week and they will now occur on Wednesday 21st May. We are aiming to send available time-slots home to parents on Monday.
I am aware that members of our choir will be travelling to Canberra on that day to participate in Big Sing. I suggest parents that have children in the choir make an appointment prior to 5pm so you can collect your child when they arrive back at school.
Soccer Carnival
We were blessed with wonderful weather on Wednesday for our soccer carnival. The students enjoyed themselves and all the games were played in the right spirit. It was good to be able to host the event after the carnival being put on pause during Covid. While we had a few schools participate we hope the numbers will increase in coming years.
There are a lot of people to thank. Thanks go to all the parents who assisted by managing teams and for volunteering in the canteen; the Hennessy students for their assistance on the day both in the canteen and refereeing; the Young Soccer Club for preparing the fields and letting us use their facilities; members of the Community Council for their organisation prior to the day; the staff from St Mary’s, especially Leonne Challen and Doona Dal Molin for the preparatory work they put in and finally to all the students for their wonderful participation.
Mother’s Day Activities
We had a wonderful turnout of mothers, grandmothers, aunties and carers for our Mother’s Day celebrations today. I hope you enjoyed visiting your child’s classroom, the opening prayer and our Junior Dance Crew. It was wonderful to see so many visiting St Mary's and I am sure the children appreciated your presence. Thank you to the teachers from Year Three and Four for organising the day, especially Mrs Sullivan and Mrs Roberts. Thank you to the parents who provided morning tea. Thank you also to Mrs Murphy for the work she put into the Book Fair.
COMMUNITY COUNCIL TRIVIA NIGHT
The doors will be open at 4pm to help set up and decorate your tables.
