Dear Parents,
Over the next few weeks we have two events organised by both the school and the Community Council which require support from our parent community. The first is next Wednesday when we are hosting our invitational soccer carnival with over 200 participants. We ask any parents that are able to pop into the canteen to assist to do so. All money raised from this event and also the Trivia Night on the 27th May will go towards new readers. When we hold the Trivia Night we will be asking for volunteers to help set up the school hall on Saturday evening and help with packing up the hall on Sunday morning. More information regarding the Trivia Night including food options will be going home next week.
Parents are reminded that parent-teacher interviews will take place on Wednesday 17th May commencing after school and continuing to 7.30pm. We would love all parents to make this a priority as it is how we communicate student progress to parents. While interim reports, end of semester reports and work samples are important, nothing beats a face to face meeting. If you, for whatever reason, are unable to meet with your child’s teachers, I ask you to contact them and arrange a mutually convenient time to meet.
On Monday we will send home the time slots available for each teacher via Compass.
Next Tuesday sees some of our Year Four students receiving the sacrament of Reconciliation. We ask members of our community to keep these children in your prayers over the upcoming days.
Canberra Trip
Yesterday I took fifteen students to Canberra for the North Canberra/Gungahlin Zone of the ACT Primary Chess Championships. Each played seven games with varying levels of success. They all enjoyed the experience and it was a pleasure to take them. I thank Mrs Hennock for accompanying us for the day.
We have two more trips to Canberra planned with members of the Liturgical Choir going to Big Sing on the 24th May and the Girl’s Chess Championships on the 16th June.

RECONCILIATION
Students from Year 4 have been busy preparing for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We have 14 student receiving this sacrament on Tuesday 9th May at 5:30pm at the St Mary’s Parish Church. We ask that you keep them in your prayers as they undertake this important step in their faith journey.
YEAR 3 LITURGY
Today Year 3 celebrated their class liturgy on the theme of 'Love'. We had some wonderful students reading and teaching us how to show love and care to our family, friends and neighbours.
A special thank you to our parents, grandparents other special visitors who were able to attend and celebrate with us.

Soccer Carnival
Thank you to all the parents who have Opted In to this event. We have had an overwhelming response with 144 students attending. We will be sending four Year 1/2 teams, five Year 3/4 teams and six Year 5/6 teams. Teams are being finalised and will be sent out via Compass on Monday. The draw will be sent out as soon as available.
Thank you to the 7 parents that have offered to help manage a team - this means we now have 8 teams without any managers. I am unable to assign staff to teams as they are required for supervision. We really need your help!!! You do not need any experience in soccer - you will be just managing the team to ensure they are on the field at the right time and subbing players on and off. It is lots of fun and the staff will be there to help!!!! Please email me if you can help. leonne.challen@cg.catholic.edu.au
Some reminders:
- Students are to wear their sports uniform and must have shin pads to play.
- Students are to be dropped at Gus Smith Oval from 8.30 onwards. Due to starting times there will be no bus from school in the morning.
- Students may be collected by parents at the conclusion of their games. All remaining students will be bused back to school for normal school departures.
- There will be a canteen and sausage sizzle available at Gus Smith Oval.
- The Year 5/6 students will play at Cranfield Oval and will be able to access the canteen at Gus Smith Oval during their breaks.
- Please ensure students have a hat, sunscreen and plenty of food and drinks for the day.
A big thank you to the Community Council for organising the canteen, Paul Cameron for setting up an organising the draw and Brendan Croese for assisting us with referees for the day. We are so grateful for your generosity and support!

BOOK FAIR
Our annual Book Fair will be held in our school library with books available for sale on Thursday 11th May and Friday 12th May 2023. The Book Fair will be open for sales from 9:00am - 3:20pm.
Ashton Scholastic will be offering a wonderful array of books catering to all ages and interests including quality picture books, novels, information, and reference books.
We see this as an opportunity to promote reading for pleasure and foster literacy through developing a love of books. Sales from the Book Fair attract a generous commission from Scholastic, and this is then used to purchase resources for use in the library.
Students from Kinder to Year 6 will visit the Book Fair during their library time to browse and preview the books available for sale. During this visit students will create a Wish List of book titles that they can take home. Parents and students can either visit the fair 'in person' or complete an online purchase.
PURCHASING BOOKS ONLINE
Students will have a list of book titles on their Wish List. To purchase from the Book Fair simply go online, select our school, make your payment and record your receipt number on the wish list. Return the Wish List with the titles listed to St Mary’s Library.
Further details, including the website may be found on the Wish List. The purchased books will then be sent home with your child. Alternatively, students can make cash purchases at school. Any titles that are sold out will be ordered and delivered to student classrooms soon after the completion of the fair.
Thank you for supporting our school library. Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you require further information.
